Candle making is a kitchen craft. Melt soy flakes, add fragrance at the right temperature, pour into a jar with a centred wick and wait. A complete kit is worth it for the first batch because you get wax, oils, dyes, wicks and vessels together. After that, buy wax and fragrance separately — they run out at different speeds. Wooden wicks are the upgrade that makes a handmade candle sound like a fireplace.

Quick tips

•Use a thermometer. Add fragrance around 60–70°C or the scent burns off.
•Let candles cure 3–7 days before lighting or the throw will be weak.
•Wick size must match jar diameter. Too small and you get tunnelling.
•Weigh the wax. Volume guesses make under-filled jars.

Common questions

Soy or paraffin?

Soy is the beginner default in the UK: clean burn, good scent throw, easy to melt. Paraffin is cheaper but smokier.

Why did my candle tunnel?

The wick is too thin for the jar, or the first burn was shorter than the full melt pool. First burn should reach the edges.

Can I use essential oils?

Some work, many do not throw well in soy. Purpose-made candle fragrance oils are more reliable.
